Staged Contact-Aware Global Human Motion Forecasting

Scene-aware global human motion forecasting is critical for manifold applications, including virtual reality, robotics, and sports. The task combines human trajectory and pose forecasting within the provided scene context, which represents a significant challenge. So far, only Mao et al. NeurIPS'22 have addressed scene-aware global motion, cascading the prediction of future scene contact points and the global motion estimation. They perform the latter as the end-to-end forecasting of future trajectories and poses. However, end-to-end contrasts with the coarse-to-fine nature of the task and it results in lower performance, as we demonstrate here empirically. We propose a STAGed contact-aware global human motion forecasting STAG, a novel three-stage pipeline for predicting global human motion in a 3D environment. We first consider the scene and the respective human interaction as contact points. Secondly, we model the human trajectory forecasting within the scene, predicting the coarse motion of the human body as a whole. The third and last stage matches a plausible fine human joint motion to complement the trajectory considering the estimated contacts. Compared to the state-of-the-art (SoA), STAG achieves a 1.8% and 16.2% overall improvement in pose and trajectory prediction, respectively, on the scene-aware GTA-IM dataset. A comprehensive ablation study confirms the advantages of staged modeling over end-to-end approaches. Furthermore, we establish the significance of a newly proposed temporal counter called the "time-to-go", which tells how long it is before reaching scene contact and endpoints. Notably, STAG showcases its ability to generalize to datasets lacking a scene and achieves a new state-of-the-art performance on CMU-Mocap, without leveraging any social cues. A Longitudinal Study

Adverse experiences interact with individual vulnerability in the etiology of mental disorders, but due to the paucity of longitudinal studies, their precise interplay remains unclear. Here, we investigated how individual differences in threat responsiveness modulated adjustments in negative affect during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants (N = 441) underwent a fear conditioning and generalization experiment between 2013 and 2020 and were reassessed regarding anxiety and depression symptoms after the pandemic outbreak. Participants showed increased levels of negative affect following pandemic onset, which were partly modulated by laboratory measures of threat responsiveness. Decreased differentiation of threat and safety signals in participants with higher prepandemic depression and anxiety scores in the laboratory assessment were most predictive of increased symptom levels after the onset of the pandemic. However, effects were small and should be replicated in independent samples to further characterize how individual differences in threat processing interact with adverse experiences in the development of psychopathology.Peer Reviewe

International audienceBACKGROUND: Cardiogenic shock (CS) complicating acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains a major concern. Failure of the left ventricular (LV) pump is the primary insult in most forms of CS, but other parts of the circulatory system and diastolic function contribute to shock. However, little is known of the clinical presentation, management and outcomes according to LV function in these patients.OBJECTIVES: To assess the presentation, management and clinical outcomes in patients admitted for AMI with CS according to early LV ejection fraction (LVEF), using long-term data from the French registry of Acute ST-elevation or non-ST-elevation Myocardial Infarction (FAST-MI) 2010.METHODS: We analysed baseline characteristics, management and 3-year mortality in patients with CS, according to LVEF (≤40% vs>40%). The analyses were replicated in the FAST-MI 2005 cohort.RESULTS: Among 4169 patients with AMI included in the survey, the incidence of CS was 3.3%. LVEF was>40% in 43%. Early PCI (≤24hours) was used more often in patients with LV dysfunction (61% vs 42%), as was the use of optimal medical therapy at discharge (66% vs 40%). CS remained associated with a major increase in 3-year mortality, both in patients with LVEF ≤40% (55%) and in those with LVEF>40% (44%). Using Cox multivariable analysis, LVEF ≤40% was associated with higher 3-year mortality (hazard ratio 2.08, 95% confidence interval 1.15-3.78) in patients with AMI with CS. Consistent results were found in the replication cohort.CONCLUSIONS: Despite the many circulatory system contributors to the physiopathology of CS in patients with AMI, the occurrence of early LV systolic dysfunction is associated with higher long-term mortality.Contexte: Le choc cardiogénique (CC) reste une complication redoutable de l’infarctus du myocarde (IDM). Pourtant peu de données sont disponibles sur l’épidémiologie des patients présentant un IDM compliqué de CC en fonction de la fonction ventriculaire gauche (VG).Objectifs: Évaluer la présentation clinique, la prise en charge et la mortalité à trois ans des patients avec CC à la phase aiguë d’un IDM en fonction de la présence ou non d’une dysfonction VG (DVG) à partir des données de FAST-MI2010.Méthodes: Les patients avec DVG (fraction d’éjection VG [FEVG] ≤ 40 %) étaient comparés aux patients sans DVG. Les analyses étaient répliquées dans la cohorte FAST-MI 2005.Résultats: Parmi les 4169 patients ayant présenté un IDM, 3,3 % des patients ont présenté un CC dont 43 % avec FEVG > 40 %. L’angioplastie percutanée précoce (≤ 24 heures) était utilisée plus souvent chez les patients avec DVG (61 % vs 42 %). Le CC restait associé à une mortalité élevée à trois ans dans les deux groupes ; 55 % chez le groupe FEVG ≤ 40 % et 44 % dans le groupe FEVG > 40 %. En analyse multivariée, la DVG < 40 % était associée à une surmortalité à trois ans (HR 2,08, IC95 % 1,15–3,78) chez les patients en CC. Changes in One-Year Mortality in Elderly Patients Admitted with Acute Myocardial Infarction in Relation with Early Management

International audienceBACKGROUND:Elderly patients are underrepresented in acute myocardial infarction trials. Our aim was to determine whether, in elderly patients, changes in management in the past 15 years are associated with improved 1-year mortality after hospital admission for myocardial infarction.METHODS:We used data from 4 1-month French registries, conducted 5 years apart from 1995 to 2010, including 3389 elderly patients (≥75 years of age).RESULTS:From 1995 to 2010, mean age remained stable (82.1 years), similar in ST- and non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction patients. Obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia increased. History of prior myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral artery disease remained stable, while history of heart failure decreased. Major changes in management were noted: early percutaneous coronary intervention, early treatment with antiplatelet agents, low-molecular-weight heparin, beta-blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker, and statins all increased. Early mortality after hospital admission decreased from 25.0% to 8.4%. One-year mortality decreased from 36.2% to 20.0% (adjusted hazard ratio 2010 vs 1995: 0.47, 0.39-0.57), both for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (36.8% to 21.1%) and non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (34.8% to 19.1%). Mortality reduction was observed in all age groups, including those ≥85 years of age (from 46.2% to 31.4%). The study period, however, was no longer associated with decreased mortality when variables reflecting management changes were taken into account.CONCLUSIONS:Early and 1-year mortality after hospital admission of elderly patients with acute myocardial infarction has substantially decreased over the past 15 years. This improvement is likely mediated by increasing use of recommended management strategies. These data support the application of guidelines derived from trials mostly including younger patients to elderly populations as well

ERA industrial technology roadmap for low-carbon technologies in energy intensive industries

The EU has to drastically accelerate the clean energy transition and increase Europe's energy independence from fossil fuels – and from Russia. This focus is not new: decarbonisation of industry is a key element on the EU’s path to achieving the objective of climate neutrality by 2050 and an intermediate target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, as laid down in the European Climate Law. However, bringing innovative low-carbon industrial technologies quickly to the market has become more urgent than ever. Global perspective of familial hypercholesterolaemia: a cross-sectional study from the EAS Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC)

none724siBackground The European Atherosclerosis Society Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC) global registry provides a platform for the global surveillance of familial hypercholesterolaemia through harmonisation and pooling of multinational data. In this study, we aimed to characterise the adult population with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia and described how it is detected and managed globally.Methods Using FHSC global registry data, we did a cross-sectional assessment of adults (aged 18 years or older) with a clinical or genetic diagnosis of probable or definite heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia at the time they were entered into the registries. Data were assessed overall and by WHO regions, sex, and index versus non-index cases.Findings Of the 61 612 individuals in the registry, 42 167 adults (21 999 [53.6%] women) from 56 countries were included in the study. Of these, 31 798 (75.4%) were diagnosed with the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria, and 35 490 (84.2%) were from the WHO region of Europe. Median age of participants at entry in the registry was 46.2 years (IQR 34.3-58.0); median age at diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolaemia was 44.4 years (32.5-56.5), with 40.2% of participants younger than 40 years when diagnosed. Prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors increased progressively with age and varied by WHO region. Prevalence of coronary disease was 17.4% (2.1% for stroke and 5.2% for peripheral artery disease), increasing with concentrations of untreated LDL cholesterol, and was about two times lower in women than in men. Among patients receiving lipid-lowering medications, 16 803 (81.1%) were receiving statins and 3691 (21.2%) were on combination therapy, with greater use of more potent lipid-lowering medication in men than in women. Median LDL cholesterol was 5.43 mmol/L (IQR 4.32-6.72) among patients not taking lipid-lowering medications and 4.23 mmol/L (3.20-5.66) among those taking them. Among patients taking lipid-lowering medications, 2.7% had LDL cholesterol lower than 1.8 mmol/L; the use of combination therapy, particularly with three drugs and with proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 inhibitors, was associated with a higher proportion and greater odds of having LDL cholesterol lower than 1.8 mmol/L. Compared with index cases, patients who were non-index cases were younger, with lower LDL cholesterol and lower prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular diseases (all p&lt;0.001).Interpretation Familial hypercholesterolaemia is diagnosed late. Guideline-recommended LDL cholesterol concentrations are infrequently achieved with single-drug therapy. Cardiovascular risk factors and presence of coronary disease were lower among non-index cases, who were diagnosed earlier.
